HW for April 5 - Malcolm X

Comment on the rhetoric strategies used in "The Ballot or the Bullet" (1964) to create allegiance or non-alignment to different addressees and ideas of democracy.

2 comments:

  1. Malcolm X establishes common ground with his addressees by saying that the black community and only the black community needs to fend for themselves. (There will be no help from the part of the white man.)
As for different ideas of democracy, he alludes to the Constitution and says that the US are breaking their own laws. He also underlines the importance of the UN, as an international institution that can oversee whether individual governments aren't violating human rights.

"This is part of what’s wrong with you: You do too much singing. Today, it’s time to stop singing and start swinging. You can’t sing up on freedom, but you can swing up on some freedom. Cassius Clay can (Muhammad Ali) sing, but singing didn’t help him to become the heavy-weight champion of the world." - Malcolm X
